What Are SMD LED Display, DIP LED Display, GOB LED Display, COB LED Display?

Jan 20, 2023|

SMD LED Display, GOB LED Display, and COB LED Display are all different technologies used in LED (Light Emitting Diode) displays, each with its own characteristics and advantages. Let's break down what each of these terms means:

COB LED Display

SMD LED Display:

SMD stands for "Surface Mount Device." SMD LED displays use individual LED chips that are mounted onto a circuit board. These LED chips are typically quite small and are soldered onto the board. SMD LED displays are known for their high resolution, color accuracy, and brightness. They are commonly used in indoor and outdoor applications and can be found in various types of LED screens, from small digital signs to large video walls. SMD LED displays can achieve vibrant and sharp visuals due to the closely packed arrangement of individual LEDs.

DIP LED Display:

DIP package is the abbreviation of dual inline-pin package, commonly known as plug-in display. It is the first to be developed among the three encapsulation modes. The lamp beads are produced by LED lamp bead packaging manufacturers, and then inserted into the LED PCB lamp board by LED module and display manufacturers, and DIP semi-outdoor modules and outdoor waterproof modules are produced through wave soldering. In the early stage, three colors of red, green and blue lights were inserted on the PCB to form an RGB pixel point. In the later stage, three kinds of RGB chips can be packaged in one lamp bead, that is, a three-in-one outdoor display screen, which is relatively improved. production efficiency and production cost. However, no matter whether it is a single-lamp RGB or a three-in-one RGB, the dot pitch is limited by the diameter of the lamp bead. At present, it can only achieve P6, and it is difficult to achieve a higher-density outdoor display. The protective performance is good, but the viewing angle is not easy to fix accurately, generally between 100-110, so it is suitable for outdoor large-pitch display.

GOB LED Display:

GOB stands for "Glue-On-Board." GOB LED displays are a type of SMD LED display with an additional protective layer. In GOB technology, a layer of transparent glue is applied over the surface of the LED modules to enhance durability and protect the LEDs from environmental factors such as dust, moisture, and physical damage. This protective layer also helps to improve the overall image quality by reducing reflections and enhancing contrast. GOB LED displays are commonly used in indoor and outdoor settings where the displays are exposed to challenging weather conditions.

COB LED Display:

COB stands for "Chip-On-Board." In COB LED displays, instead of using individual LED chips like in SMD displays, multiple LED chips are directly mounted onto a single substrate. This creates a dense array of LEDs in a smaller space. COB technology can provide high luminosity and efficient heat dissipation due to the close proximity of the LEDs. COB displays are known for their uniformity of light and can be used for various applications, including large outdoor billboards and indoor displays.

In summary:

SMD LED displays use individual LED chips mounted on a circuit board for high resolution and color accuracy.

DIP LED Displays are the abbreviation of dual inline-pin package, only used for outdoor LED screen.

GOB LED displays are a type of SMD display with an added protective glue layer for durability and improved image quality.

COB LED displays feature multiple LED chips mounted closely together on a single substrate for high luminosity and uniform light distribution.

The choice between these technologies depends on factors such as the intended application, environmental conditions, budget, and desired image quality.
